Episode description

In this episode, I explain how caffeine works and how to use it to optimize mental and physical performance, including how dose, timing, and individual sensitivity influence its benefits and tradeoffs. I explain how caffeine blocks adenosine signaling, why feeling more awake is not the same as being more rested, and how absorption and half-life shape its effects. I discuss attention, memory, physical performance, sleep, tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal, along with caffeine’s effects on blood pressure, metabolism, hydration, and anxiety. I also distinguish caffeine itself from coffee, tea, yerba maté, energy drinks, and pre-workout, and examine what long-term coffee research can and cannot tell us about health. Finally, I evaluate common recommendations, including waiting 90 to 120 minutes after waking, caffeine cycling, and combining caffeine with L-theanine. Throughout the episode, I separate established findings from plausible mechanisms and overstated claims, building toward a practical framework for choosing a dose, protecting sleep, and deciding when caffeine is useful.
